DIR Floortime Approach in Occupational Therapy

At Activate OT, we use DIR Floortime approach to connect with young people who experience challenges with communication, social interaction, and emotional regulation.

DIR (Developmental, Individual- Differences, Relationship-Based) Floortime is a trauma-informed approach that prioritises emotional safety, trust, and connection, making it particularly effective for children with neurodivergent profiles or those who have experienced early adversity.

Trauma-Informed Method

This method is trauma-informed because it:

  • Recognises the impact of past experiences â€“ Many children who struggle to communicate have faced challenges such as sensory overload, unmet needs, or difficulty being understood. DIR Floortime provides a safe, responsive space for them to express themselves in their own way.

  • Builds co-regulation before self-regulation â€“ Instead of demanding compliance or verbal communication, we focus on attuned interactions, helping young people feel safe and understood before expecting them to engage more actively.

  • Encourages autonomy and respect â€“ We follow the child’s lead, respecting their sensory needs and individual differences rather than imposing expectations that might feel overwhelming or distressing.

How DIR Floortime Enhances Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy (OT) aims to support participation in meaningful daily activities, and DIR Floortime aligns with this by addressing sensory processing, emotional regulation, and social engagement in a naturalistic, play-based way. Through interactive, relationship-driven sessions, OT practitioners help young people:

Strengthen motor planning and coordination through playful engagement.

  • Develop sensory regulation strategies in a way that feels safe and enjoyable.

  • Build social confidence and communication without pressure, meeting them at their level.

  • Increase flexibility and problem-solving skills through shared experiences in play.

Our Environment

By combining DIR Floortime with OT interventions, we create an environment where young people can explore, connect, and develop essential life skills in a way that is empowering, validating, and joyful.
